I often refer to my work as “nature intensified”. I strive to reveal the undercurrent of the natural world- not just what it looks like, but its essence.
But to fully engage with my work, the viewer must shift their focus between the layers in my paintings.
On the surface are the nuances of color, the dance of light and shadow, and the interplay of the forms within the composition. Beneath that are the objects and texture that the paint traverses, flowing over and around them.
At some point the viewer will recognize objects embedded within the painting such as feathers, string, shells, and netting. They may disengage their focus from the entirety of the piece to examine how those objects are positioned and the colors coating them.
Their focus can then shift back to the full painting with the knowledge of how those materials and objects are incorporated and harmonizes within the composition.
What excites me is how this interpretation of life and nature can shift with each new canvas. There are endless possibilities, and I’ve only just begun to explore them.
